2017 Season Preview

Head Coach: Tom Pfister (12th Season)

2016 Record: 17-10

2nd Place District 24
State Sectional Qualifiers
6th Place A-South
Shore Conference Tournament Qualifiers
3rd Place Collingswood Tournament

With a host of talent returning from last year's 17-win team, and a move out of the brutal A-South into B-South, Lacey is looking towards big things in 2017.

The run of talent the Lions have from 106-138 looks like it could be among the very best in the Shore. Hunter Gutierrez is back at 106 after a freshman season that saw him punch a ticket to Atlantic City following a D24 title run and a 2nd place finish at the Regions. He should be among the top 6-pounders in the State and is definitely a contender for a spot on the podium come March. Juniors Tim Downs, who picked up 7 wins in limited action, and Adam Krinic look to step up to man the 113-120 weights, while Lacey has a great run at 126-138 with fellow juniors Luke Moynihan, Luke Gauthier, and Evan Cyphers. Moynihan is a 2x-D24 medal winner, including a title winner in 2015, and Gauthier was a Region qualifier during a 29-win freshman season. The pair have combined 108 wins in their first two seasons and are a big time 1-2 punch. Cyphers will be no slouch either. From 6 wins in 2015, to 16 last year, he is also capable of big things in this lineup. Not to get a head of ourselves, but without a senior in this group, this could be a ridiculously good stretch next year.

The upper half of the lineup will be loaded with seniors, highlighted by 2-time D24 medal winner Matt Garrity, who enters the season with 76 career wins and is looking to become Lacey's first full 4-season 100-match winner since 1999. Garrity is joined by Riley D'Ornellas, 17-match winner last year, as the experienced veterans of the upper half. The rest of the upper half will be key for coach Pfister's squad. Liam Muzyka, Zach Larney, and Jon Rioux all have experience, and have been working towards taking the next step. If they do, it makes this lineup that much more difficult to get through and makes Lacey a dangerous, dangerous team.

Truth be told, even if they stayed in A-South this year, Lacey was going to make noise this year. The move down to B-South though makes them an instant title contender. The battle for that B-South crown could very well be decided over the span of three days as Lacey hosts Jackson Liberty on 1/11, then has a Friday night trip to Pt. Boro on 1/13. The SJG3 Section is tough, as Delsea looms large and other programs like Seneca and Timber Creek are in the mix, but stay healthy, and  put this type of lineup out, and you never know.

Individually, there are several guys here that are going to make post-season noise. The new District is pretty tough, but any time you can get away from Southern in a District, that's a good thing. Regardless, the Lions have guys who have already proven they can win when we hit late February, and this is a team that should be well represented on the mats come Regions, with several strong contenders for a trip to Boardwalk Hall in March.

A definite, rising program to watch in 2017.
