Graduation was particularly kind to Lacey, and as a result, the Lions return a deep, talented group that is ready to take a big step forward in the Shore in 2012.
Lacey has double digit winners returning in each of the first four weights, and has a nice trio of freshmen behind them that will also contribute in Connor Garrity, Jimmy Knoeller, and Kyle Brandt.
There's a lot of youth in the middle as well, but the Lions do have senior Danny Moore (2nd place D24 in 2011) as a very solid presence. Junior Luke Fernandez, who won 18 bouts in his first year as a starter, will also supply strength for Lacey in the middleweights.
Up top, the Lions will feature a very tough 1-2 punch at 220 & 285 with seniors Lex Knapp (D24 champion in 2011) and Jake Fernandez, who led the team in wins last year with 27. If returning upperclass letter winners Pat Schinder, Trevor Finch, and Brett Smith take that next step this season, this could be a very tough group to contend with in the duals.
Coach Pfister has set the goals high for his team, and if everything comes together as they hope, this is a team that could surprise a lot of people. A fast start out of the gate is very possible with everyone that is returning down low and the talent they have to fill in the heavier slots created by the new weight classes. Keep an eye on this team.
Wrestler To Watch - (Sr) Jake Fernandez
Most people would probably guess that last year's wins leader for the Lions would have been Region participants Danny Moore or Lex Knapp, but it was heavyweight Jake Fernandez who very quietly had a great year in his first season as a starter. Expect Fernandez to be among the top heavies in the Shore this season, and he has to be considered to at least have a good shot to get in the medal mix at Regions.
